The son of South African rugby legend Joost van der Westhuizen has penned an emotional tribute letter to his father days after he passed away.

The former Springbok, who helped his country win a historic World Cup in 1995, died last Monday aged 45 after a six-year battle with motor neurone disease.

Under the heading 'Tribute from Jordan van der Westhuizen', the youngster thanked his father for being 'the best he could be', while asking for some divine intervention before Liverpool's Premier League game against Tottenham at Anfield on Saturday evening, which the Reds went on to win 2-0.

'Thank you for everything but most of all for 'being the best you can be!' he wrote.

'You are the best rugby player in the world. I want to be the best sportsman like you, because you said I must work hard.

'I will always love you to the moon [and] back.'

He added in the letter, which was posted to Twitter by former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld: 'Daddy please tell God that Liverpool must win. You will never walk alone! I love you so much.'

First capped by the Springboks in 1993, Van der Westhuizen made 89 international appearances and scored 38 tries as scrum-half, a position that he is credited with transforming single-handedly.

In 2015, four years after his diagnosis, a fragile Van der Westhuizen joined fellow 1995 World Cup champions at Ellis Park Stadium for an event to commemorate 20 years since the team's historic victory.

He was renowned for his fearless tackles on Jonah Lomu in that game and setting up the Joel Stransky drop goal which won the cup for the Springboks, just one year after South Africa's first democratic elections.

After a domestic career spent entire with the Bulls, he quit all forms of the game in 2003.

Eight years later he was diagnosed with the debilitating illness, which attacks the nervous system and for which there is no known cure.

He also skippered the Springbok's sevens team at the 1997 World Cup, losing in the final to Fiji.

Van der Westhuizen was remembered in a minute silence before England's Six Nations win over Wales in Cardiff on Saturday.

MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE

Motor neurone disease is a rare condition that progressively damages parts of the nervous system. This leads to muscle weakness, often with visible wasting.

It occurs when specialist nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord called motor neurones stop working properly.

Motor neurones control important muscle activity, such as: gripping, walking, speaking, swallowing and breathing.

Van der Westhuizen's wife, singer Amor Vittone, who supported him through his illness despite the couple being separated, paid an emotional tribute to the father of their two children at a memorial service on Friday in front of several hundred mourners.

She remembered him as a 'handsome man with the most beautiful eyes and with goals, ambitions and a dynamic mindset.

'He swept me off my feet.

'In the last seven years he fought so bravely with this awful, horrible disease.

'The main reason I think that he fought so hard was that he wanted to be there for his children.'

Van der Westhuizen set up the J9 Foundation to promote awareness of motor neurone disease, using the No 9 from his shirt number.
